| Well, I feel silly. after lauding win7 along with Avast, and Malbytes here and other places, it seems I may have something wrong with my laptop. Before I go to the drastic measure of reloading Win7 (release candidate), since I don't currently have any other versions of Win7, I thought I'd put some help wanted ads out. Here's the situation: After turning on my laptop, windows goes to the login screen (it seems to take a little longer than normal). I am the admin, so after I type in my PW, the screen goes black, and nothing else happens. If I restart the laptop, I of course get the "Windows did not shut down normally, would you like to start in safe mode" etc. If I chose safe mode, I can log in to my user, using my PW. Also, I have found that if I choose "start normally" I can go to my wife's user and log in normal mode, but if I do that, any program that requires admin rights will give my a black screen after I type my PW in. What I was doing when the problem happened: I was online here at AS, Yahoo mail, another forum ATS, and facebook. I tried to open a new tab to go to youtube to hotlink a vid, but youtube wouldn't open. Right before I noticed this problem, I had downloaded a file to install "American Army 3" a FPS developed by the US Army. I decided that I didn't actually want to download and install the full game after the installer started installing. I canceled the install, and shortly thereafter I noticed the problem with youtube. I was able to refresh and change pages on all the other open tabs, so I figured it was just youtube. I shut down laptop to go to lunch, came back, and started having the login problem. I'm going to go home early, log on my wife's user, run Avast, and maybe try TrendMicro online. Oh, and I've also done a system restore to the first of this month with no results. I do have the recovery disk I made right after I installed Win7 RC on this laptop, and have tried to use the startup recovery section of it, but it shows no problems found, and doesn't fix anything. Any advice would be appreciated!

| When you receive the black screen, can you press CTRL, ALT and DEL to bring the task manager up? If so: http://windows7news.com/2009/12/01/w...od-fix-update/

| Nope, CaD doesn't do anything..All I can do is hold the power button intil it shuts off, then restart, but I will check that out anyway..never know what you will find.

| Bensonboo, I will try that article in safe mode, however, since I am using the laptop with my wife's user (limited user) when it asks for a pw to enter msconfig, the laptop locks up again after I enter the PW. I don't ever get a cursor as described either, but I will attempt it anyway before I do an online virus scan or reload Win7 RC. BTW, I didn't search BSOD, as I always assumed that was Blue Screen of Death, not Black

| I had some similar trouble when I first started with Win7 but have worked through the bugs and its great. I would try shutting down and unplugging and pulling out the battery for a few minutes and then try rebooting. If you can get in remember that in order to run programs as an administrator (even if you are logged in as such) you will have to right click on the file and pick run as administrator from the menu. If you want to make that permanent right click on the file and go to properties then select the Compatibility tab then check the bottom tab "Run this program as an administrator". This will also come in handy when try to install programs. |

| bensonboo, I tried the suggestions from that article and had my fingers crossed as the problem sounded almost identical to mine. Alas, to no avail. Fric, thanks but I am aware of all that and have tried all of it. I've been running Win7 RC since it came out on this machine, with no problems at all. Guess I'm gonna try the re-install as online AV didn't show anything, and I found nothing on boards or MS to help. sigh..I was hoping to do this in another month or so when I had a full copy of Win7 instead of the RC. Oh well.

| Well, I reinstalled Win7 rc on the laptop, now I can log on, but my laptop touchpad isn't working right. I can move the mouse pointer with it and the right/left buttons work, but there is no scroll function, nor can I turn off tapping. Looked in mouse properties, and it doesn't show Synaptics anywhere, the mouse is a PS2 plug in? WTF?? So, off to Toshiba's website to d/l synaptics drivers, etc. Hope that works.

| it's almost never a virus. it sounds almost more like you needed to repair windows instead of going straight to the reinstall. then again my advice is almost always shite

I'd love too, but $$ is kinda tight right now (wife lost her job, and my work has been slow for over a year now) so am trying to find a rentload type W7. I had a place bookmarked on FireFox, but somehow when I exported my bookmarks before reintalling Win7, I must have done it wrong as FF doesn't recognize the file.

| Gotta tag on it at Orange. If that doesn't work, then I'll try quicksilver's. Thanks though Goofy!
