| So I inherited another comp and found out there are a few minor problems with the hardware. I have 4 USB sockets at the back, all working fine and two on the top ( I don't why they put them there This device is working properly. Now when I plug in anything this is what I get: ![]() It doesn't matter which device I try. ![]() I've tried loading drivers, the same on the back sockets but to no avail. Is there some way I can fix this with software or is this hardware portion just junk now? |

| I tried a camera, a mem stick, a mouse, a zip drive,...nothing works in those two but they all work in the back. I loaded the original drivers via cd for example for the camera with the same result. It works fine in the other sockets. |

| Let it snow! Yeah, right. ![]() | From a quick search, here's three things to check out. 1 - Check in BIOS if USB devices support during boot is turned on. 2 - Right click My Computer, click Properties, select Hardware tab and fire up Device Manager. Navigate to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and expand the selection so you can see USB Root Hub. Right click USB Root Hub and click Properties. Select Power Management tab and look to see if there is a tick in the checkbox "Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power". It's usually ticked by default. Click to remove the tick and click OK. You'll need to do this with all your USB root hub entries. 3 - Go to device manager by right clicking on my computer and clicking properties and selecting hardware and then device manager, if there is a yellow ( ! ) open the tab and doublle click on the usb controller and click on update driver. Hope one of these helps! |

| Great advice Leggs! I thought he might have done this already. I remember my brother had a Gateway, and it had some top mounted ports. I think they were intended for the printer.

| Crossed Fingers ![]() | It sounds like the the connection with the motherboard maybe be fried or the actual USB connector at the top maybe fried. In other words I am leaning toward electrical/physical. It is was a driver problem it would be seen at the back USB also, they all use the same USB controller

| Still Holding On To '08 ![]() | As DH said, it sounds like its a problem with the port itself. Have you opened the case and made sure all the connects are tight and in place? Also, does the port power the devices it should? Does your memstick have a light on it and does it light up?

| ![]() My pc has the potential for 8 USB ports...I have 6 right now that are physically visible and always work. I believe I have the add-on card thingy with 2 additional ports I can plug into one of my pci slots. Reading your device stuff Mugz it appears as though the two 2 USB ports are not even connected hardwarewise. They could run off a slightly different bus than the main two...my last two entries in the top seven are enhanced USB controllers. Maybe that pc uses a similar method to feed the USB connections to the roof of the case ( what a dumb-ass design Have you looked under the hood to see the connections up there from the mobo? |
