| My buddy has a VISTA laptop that cannot find his wireless router (or any others around) at his house. However, when he takes it to work, there are multiple wireless networks available and he can connect just fine. His old laptop (running XP) worked fine at his house. Also, his XBOX 360 and WII can connect to his wireless network just fine. The wireless adapter is turned on, the router is broadcasting... Any thoughts as to why the new laptop can't find the home network?

| That's odd...I have a wireless network at home and my Vista PC and my Vista laptop both have no troubles finding the network. ![]() Do any other wireless networks show up or is the laptop only not seeing his network? Like at my place I can 'see' 3 or 4 other wireless networks besides my own.

![]() | He needs to read up on his wireless router. Mainly say this because Vista never had issues with finding mine but I had to reset it and update the firmware first for the router. Also Vista doesn't suck...the idiots that have ancient PCs and no knowledge on how to tweak Vista are the problem with the "vista hate wave" I have never had issues with Vista because I tweaked my system and I run a dual core and a quad core system since I am a gamer. Shadow Drive Auto Defrag Indexing Windows Defender Those 4 features are the problem with Vista...each over work the hard drive and take resources...disabling them will result in a 1 min boot time with a dual core and a 30 second boot with a quad core. I mean a real boot too... MB splash to vista not this "30 seconds from login" crap.

| Does Vista have a Wireless Network Setup Wizard like XP? Maybe running it would help. ![]()

| i wont go into why i hate vista. what software is ruling the wifi card? is it the manufacturers software or is vista controlling it? or are both trying to? i know my wifi had conflicts when xp and intels software both tried to control it. is there a 2.4ghz phone near your router or computer? if a 2.4 gig phone gets inbetween your computer and router, itll instantly kill any connection, if it stays there, your wifi wont reconnect. at least thats what happens to me >.< lol

| I don't hate VISTA, I just don't own it yet, so I can't really complain... I'm not sure what is controlling the wireless NIC...I really need to go look at this myself, and not try to do it over the phone with him I just cannot grasp this whole thing...everything else finds networks, and like I said, his laptop finds them at his job. I appreciate everyone's input. If anyone else thinks of anything, be sure to post, OK?

| Is he broadcasting the SSID ? It's possible he's not and the XP machine was configured ages ago and just connects. Access the router admin page and look for the wireless access list it will show all available devices then you can add that to the trusted list; do this with the XP machine and turn Vista machine on. Make sure the laptop wirless card is on most have a switch on the outside that can easily be turned off.

| How old are the routers? it's possible that some older stuff isn't compatible w/ Vista for some reason. My laptop occasionally has issues locating networks, but it's mostly the ancient 802.11a that it can't hardly find. ![]() |

| Also check the channel number, I once had a vista laptop that wouldnt connect either, looking the router it was broadcasting on channel 11 the laptops adapter was set to channel 9, after changing it, it worked just fine, you should see the channel number in the ADVANCED WIRELESS SETTINGS in the router config. then you can right click your wireless adapter and goto advanced properties (off the top of my head) and see the channel in there try that...
