if your in state in the u.s. that has a saftey inspection, no patching is allowed as carbon mon. fumes can enter the passenger compartment, but that aside go to an auto store and buy muffler cement, and aluminum wraping tape, go to hardware store and buy steel wool, fill hole with steel wool, cover with muffler cement, wait a hour, then wrap with aluminum wrapping tape. this will not last forever, but will defin. quiet down

good luck

Whop I should have explain a little better. It's not auctually the exhaust, but the muffler? It's one of does flat/round mufflers? It has a crack along where the weld it shut. So I was thinking of getting some kind of cement and don't they give you a metal/mesh that goes first then cement?

I'm selling this car, so I just want the noise to be gone.

yes, some of the patching kits come w mesh /and you can still patch the seam of the muffler- the way i said to do it in my first response, it won't last forever but it will definatly quiet it down alot, enough to sell it.

the noise your hearing is from the a/c compressor hub bearing & clutch, it's failing! so heres the deal, since you engine has only 1 fan belt (serpentine belt) you need to get this to a pro mech. as soon as possible! it's not just that the a/c will stop working but also when the hub bearing fails completly the belt will jump and come off IE: no alternator function, no water pump function, no power steering. now heres the reason i say to get it to a pro., there is a small chance the noise your hearing is only the clutch dragging, in which case it's an easy repair (only resetting the clutch's air gap) but this is not a job for a amatuer as special tools are required.

good luck mandi

p.s let me know how you make out

A valuable lesson.

Tell me please, I've got a '97 GMC Jimmy with some sort of electrical problem. The truck shuts down or hiccups for no apparent reason. I thought humidity might be shorting something out but without getting it on a scope or shop machine it seems to be impossible to detect. Is there anything I can do to isolate or find the trouble?
