Default Re: Your Right

When We Get Torque Specs In Our Database It Gives Us Both Metric And Standard, After 30 Years I'm Still Used To Standard, All My Torque Wrenchs Have The Ability Of Using Either Scale Though, All Bolts & Nuts Are Now Metric On All American Cars, But I Work On Everything Anyway Ie: Toyota, Chevrolet, Buick. Cadi, Bmw, Ect. Ect

Almost all metric.... every once in awhile they will throw a 1/4 inch in there just to keep us on our toes (collision tech)

(2) swapping a diesel in this car is going to require upgrading the cooling system also and swapping wiring harness from a diesel vehicle also, whole big bunch of work, and the trans is not a direct match also. no i wouldn't do it.

Thanks Mandi for the voice of reason, and appreciate the thread.

I thought most cars were mixed metric and standard. We are probably never gong to go completely standard too many people think in standard, and tool companies make a lot of money selling both sets of tool. And tools for strip out bolts cause people used standard instead of metric. There are way too many things (houses, cars, equipment, ect....) that are standard. The only field that i know that is completely metric is chemistry. NASA has had major problems with the Standard Metric system from what i can recall.

TREESMOKE: IN THE 80'S MOST AMERICAN CARS HAD BOTH METRIC & STANDARD-- O.K NOW HERES THE TRICK ON THOSE CARS, ANY BOLT THAT WENT INTO AN ENGINE BLOCK OR TRANSMISSION WAS STANDARD, ANY BOLT THAT WENT INTO A BRACKET WAS METRIC- NOW THE REASONING IS SIMPLE, THE BIG 3 DIDN'T WANT TO RETOOL ENGINE BLOCKS AND TRANSMISSIONS, BUT AT THAT TIME THEY WANTED TO CHANGE TO METRIC , SO THIS WAS THERE BEGINNING. NOW IT'S ALMOST RARE THAT I USE STANDARD ANYMORE

I think 1/4 is a touch bigger than Fords famous 5.5mm I can't remember offhand where it's found though or who uses it.

And Treesmoke the bolts on most cars are about 99.5% metric, I havent used most of my standards in many years. But some of the other things are still standard, (A/C charge, torque specs)

Okay i am wrong just remember using standard on my Berretta but that might be cause a couple of standard socket fit on metric well, i think 1/2inch is one of them.

CLOSE BUT NOT THE SAME, IF YOU TAKE A MICROMETER AND MEASURE YOU'LL SEE THERE IS A COUPLE OF THOUSANDTH DIFF. ENOUGH THAT IF YOU USE THE WRONG SIZE ON A VERY TIGHT BOLT OR NUT YOU'LL STRIP IT.

I am going to try to avoid the rebuilding of my engine as much as possible since i have 140,000 mile on it. I am not sure if it is worth doing.
