a nice goal by a goalkeeper in the MLS, roughly 70 meters' distance:

standing places. We used to have a lot of them in most or all of the big stadiums. In Britain, they began to replace standing terraces with seats after the Hillsborough disaster, and a few years later the UEFA began to impose gradually stricter restraints on standing terraces, not least because of a crowd panic incident at Brussels' Heysel stadium in the mid eighties dring a european cup final. .

We call it a concourse here

But you can't watch games from that area unless that part of the concourse is designated for 'Standing Room'

terraces are (or were) an important part of fan culture. The "real" fans would usually prefer to stand while the posh "fashion fans" would spend the extra money on seats so they wouldn't have to mix with the riff raff. In Germany there's a pressure group called "sitzen ist für'n arsch" (roughly: seating grandstands - my arse) that has manage to convince a few clubs to spend the extra money on convertible areas such as they have in Dortmund, Schalke and Cologne.

Here's a pretty decent view of Mile High Stadium home of the Denver Broncos here in town. You can see that the concourse is under all the seating areas and you couldn't even see the game from the concourse. You could watch from one of the tunnels, but the ushers don't let you stand there very long, especially if you are not in your seating area.

nice picture! European stadiums have concourses, too. But the terraces are actually grandstands without seats. So you have an excellent view .

Gotcha...I don't think there are any stadiums in the US built like that. The cheap sections are the bleacher seats...that's where the hardcore fans like to go. All they are basically are steel benches (no back no arms no nothing) and they tend to also be some of the worst seats at any stadium.

And at the newer stadiums (like Mile High above) they don't even put bleacher seats in anymore...they cater to the wealthy it seems more than to true fans anymore

I'll be watching Olympique Marseille vs. Psv, should be a match with verve...

Further, a little entertainment from Barcelona: commotion about star child Messi: haha, he's human!

Disgusting! But I bet he gets a lot of dirty fouls from his opponents, too, so it's not entirely surprising he can't be the nice boy from next door all the time.

Werder will play Panathinaikos tonight, and I hope they will manage to beat them somehow. It doesn't have to be in style, no need to run them down 5-0 or so, just win. If they do, they have all the options for finishing second in the group. Unless Inter fuck it up against the cypriots tomight, that's the best they can hope for.
