Cool Gas stations then and now

A vintage 50s station from Bochum/Germany:

A station in rural Germany (20s, probably):

A Shell station in 1939 (In switzerland, I guess):

Another rural station near Breslau / Wroclaw in 1920:

This one was avantgarde in 1955 (still in use):

One of the first self service places here (early 70s)

Another rural station near Celle (northern Germany, early 20s):

A Shell staion in downtwn Hamburg around 1920 and a few years ago:

Two stations from the 30s in typical design:

the bottom one was defined as a standard for Autobahn stations, a lot of identical stations can still be seen today, most of them used as bus stops.

Their design struck the nazis as being un-german and too modern, so they had architects draw stations in the so-called "Heimschutz" (home protection) design:

The station at the Buchenwald concentration camp:

The current look of BP's german branch ARAL:

A norwegian station (unknown vintage):

A station in rural Sweden - carefully restaurated but only as a museum piece:

And finally a vintage station on display at a museum in San Jose:

my favourite internet news mag recently launched a history section, they have tons of cool theme articles and photo galleries in there. Alas, the texts are only available in german.

The pictures are mine, I have stopped and gotten gas there. Cloquet is near Duluth just off I-35. It's hockey country for sure, I saw a Zamboni going down main street for no apparent reason. The people were very nice and friendly, but they did look and sound like they had just gotten off the boat from Sweden.

It's a nice region there, and I liked the people a lot. They don't make many words but were always bvery kind when we asked for directions or about landmarks and buildings. Don't think I ever saw so many Saabs and Volvos in one place.

Did you live there once or were you on holiday?

The company that manufactures our computer system at work is in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. I've had to go up there many times for training. If I added up all the time I've spent in Minnesota, it would be about 6 months. Made a lot of road trips on weekends. It's very beautiful up there, and I enjoyed it very much. Were you there just on vacation?

Yeah, I have friends there. A few years ago, when I was still in college, my wife and I went over there and explored the area at times when our friends had to work. Lake Superior was soooo impressive.
