its drifting, moms in Japan do that to while there kids are in school. in mini vans. Nascar is racing not drifting

Gymkhana's were pretty popular in the 70's - I remember seeing it in Hot Rod magazine, and a local shopping mall had exhibitions of this when the emission control systems strangled the straight-line performance, so handling was put more in vogue.

At that mall, I saw a lowered '75 Corvette in about 1978. It was doing some amazing things like this...they described it as "The Gymkhana Car Olympics" back then and it was more of a slalom course, with a few high speed runs and a few 90 degree turns like it showed.

Glad to see it's making a comeback. I beleve "drifting" derived from Gymkhana, as just one element taken from it.

its really just a scaled up version of autotesting thats been going on in the uk for decades

and drifting is almost a national pastime in japan

it started out as a way of racing up hillside roads

til they sort of turned in to a sport

Couldn't agree with you more. I'm not saying NASCAR doesn't take talent and skill, and I'm sure I would instantly wreck and die trying it; but it's still just cars driving around in a circle. Even if it's at incredible speeds, it's boring as hell.

Anyway, I had never heard of Gymkhana and when I first saw the video I thought the guy was going to wreck after he threw the car sideways after hauling ass at the very beginning of the video.
