| I find that in cases like this is best to be really upfront about it. I would find a gentle way of telling them I got a competitive offer that would start immediately, but that I would prefer to work for them. If there's no way for them to tell you if you're in the running, then if you hear back from them after a month and you don't think the place you're at will work, then put in your two weeks and tell the month long wait that they have to wait two weeks. If they expected you to wait a month to hear from them they will surely be willing to let you end your other job the right way. It would be crazy for them to expect applicants to stay unemployed for a month while they made up their minds. I know we haven't really met but thats my two cents, hope it helps. |

| This post human tested! ![]() | As McL said, be polite, but up-front to the second possible employer. See if it's possible for them to make a quicker decision. However, keep in mind that you did also apply for the first position, and they may want you enough to hire you right away, rather than wait, as the second one wants to do. From experience, if an employer can't make up their mind quickly about you, they may not be too serious about you. Every job I've had, I was hired within days of an interview. Employers that dithered about my application never worked out. If the first job looks like it might suit your current needs, and they hire you in good faith, you would owe it to them to give it an honest shot. In the long run, it could turn out to be the best choice. After all, if you were just looking for a 1 month temp job, you could flip burgers. |

| Yep, McLovin is right. Be upfront and entirely honest. As a desirable employee (and this is the ONLY time I will describe you as desirable) the boot is entirely on your foot. Don't use this as a bargaining chip or cynical leverage - you don't want to start off with your new employer on that basis. But explaining the situation should draw them out and if they really want you I would expect a good company to be able to make the decision. if they are fannying around then that may imply certain things about the company anyway. So er... which branch of Starbucks are you going be working at??

| i agree with what's been said so far. remember most jobs have a 90 grace period or probation period for training purposes. Even though the 2nd job doesn't start for another month, maybe take the 1st one just to make some money while waiting from the 2nd all the while still hoping the second one pans out. If so then just let the 1st job know that someone made a better offer and be on your way. if not then no harm done, you will still be working for the same company and no transition stage with pay happens. It's a win win. that's how i've always handled those situations. good luck on both too. |

Just lay it on the line to them as McLovin has stated. Honesty is the best policy and if you are transparent to your potential new boss, then they may think highly of you, and even if you end up making the "wrong" decision, keep in touch with the other employer - the person they end up hiring might not make it through the probationary period.

| I prefer accepting both, firing up the bidding war and see who likes me most. I don't ache at all accepting one, leaving after a month if I get the other. Free country and all. Hang em high. |
