I've only recently started posting in the SD section here and upon contributing some thoughts to a single thread have been met with little more than juvenile hostility and baseless accusations from a couple of the more abrasively vocal. In its current state this portion of the forum is a flaming joke perpetuated by the few. There are indeed some good topics and some good posters, there are also some good exchanges here and there but sooner or later anything good becomes watered down by the actions of those who have no real desire to take part in a meaningful discussion about current events. It's really quite sad too.

Yes, and as you post your laments about the SD section, you are doing your fair share of name calling and juvenille posting...so maybe if you can't stand the heat of this section you should look elsewhere for your posting...just a freindly thought

Whining to authorities when you have been cornered is pretty childish.

I'd be happy to review anything you want to report.

Oh no, I'm not meaning to report or police the forum, just offering my opinion on its current state, though thank you for the offer.

If something flies off the handle in SD and degenerates into a flame war, the mods should be called. Thats what they are there for.

I'm taking time off from SD for a spell. It seems the same old sides constantly badgering eachother. Nobody is willing to give an inch, and that usually ends up with name-calling, and insults.

I'll check on it later on.

Obviously the mods will disagree with that last statement, but it is general rule of discussion.
Serious discussion should be just that, serious. One should not be concerned with having a thick skin; the discussion should remain solely on topic, and there should not be any personal insults, for any reason, ever.

I think that is perfectly acceptable to point out that a person is either citing wrong facts or is otherwise is misinformed; it is not acceptable to state that the other party to the discussion is, for example, "a moron". I have actually seen that in a reply to a post. Although the reply was not to me, I commented that such a reply was not proper. I guess, I was lucky in that I was not rebuked for not minding my own business!!

i think it's amazing that you have a few posters ganging up on one poster, insulting them and accusing them of insulting other posters with no evidence is wrong.
and then to top it off a mod appears and threatens the sole poster.
I actually haven't seen that but I guess what you are alluding to is human nature. If the mod in question is friendly with the other posters but does not know or for whatever reason does not like the sole poster, he joins the gang -- but as a mod, he is above being an equal -- whatever he says goes, right or wrong, whether or not the rules of the forum dictate otherwise. So if the mod warns the sole poster, what is the sole poster to do except perhaps PM DM or leave the forum, etc.?

Okay, mods, don't jump on me, and no, I don't have any examples -- but I think that it is common sense that such a situation could easily happen.

Cornered by what?

If you mean that a group of posters "corner" a particular member by showing or stating that member's facts are wrong, etc. and "gang up" on him/her in that manner, I think that that is perfectly acceptable.

If you mean name calling or some other form of insulting, then, in my opinion, I think that he person has every right to bring the rules violation to attention of authorities. In fact, is that one of the reasons that there is a "Report Post" button by every thread. The purpose of this button is: "Note: This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts."

The thing is we mods can't and don't see everything posted in this forum and it is up to YOU to let us know when things get out of hand.

SD should indeed be Serious Discussion (most of the time)

Unless you have been thru the thread of the unanswered questions to back his story, then you should keep it to yourself. Otherwise you are only assuming what is not. And if you are going to start telling people what they should say after reading their posts, try reading posts directed at them beforehand. It goes both ways.

Yep, stay out of here if you're scared.

I'm swinging my ban stick right now so any and every insult I see will get something!
