McDonald's same-store sales rise 8.2 percent

McDonald's same-store sales rise 8.2 percent in October on demand overseas, breakfast items

OAK BROOK, Ill. (AP) -- McDonald's Corp. said Monday its worldwide same-store sales rose 8.2 percent in October, helped by demand from overseas customers.

The No. 1 hamburger chain said total sales rose 5.4 percent during the month, as consumers sought value in the chain's more inexpensive menu items.

Same-store sales, or sales at locations open at least a year, rose 5.3 percent in the U.S., helped by new menu items, including the Southern Style Chicken sandwich, and continued demand for breakfast items.

Same-store sales rose 9.8 percent in Europe. They grew 11.5 percent in the Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa region because of strong demand in Australia.

Same-store sales are a key indicator of restaurant performance since they measure growth at existing locations rather than newly opened ones.

McDonald's is scheduled to release November same-store sales on Dec. 8.

In premarket trading, shares of McDonald's added $1.88, or 3.4 percent, to $57.35.
