this is a little misleading here, it includes requests as well as actual spending thru the fiscal year 2009 and only actual spending figures from 2006 on the other countries

Fair enough. US Defense spending in 2006 was $558 billion (source: http://www.armscontrolcenter.org/pol...001/index.html)

Using 2006 to 2006 numbers, US defense spending is %41 of the world total.

(558 billion/1.32 Trillion total world spending)

Doesn't change the basic calculus-- the US spending far more than any other nation-- more than any other continent.

That's conjecture...the US budget is available to be seen by anyone. Do you really think the Russians and the Chinese are giving out 'actual and accurate' expenditure figures?

And??

The U.S. has the most powerful military in the world! Is that news?

Come to think of it! I due remember those Syrian and Russian helicopters flying water and food to the victims of the 04' tsunami! They were flying off of those Chinese and Cuban aircraft carriers! That's a good thing they were on patrol in that area! Those poor people would had died without the help!

I think its worth considering what we spend, and what we get for it. And yes, the extent to which the US spends far more than any other nation-- more than any other continent is news to most people. We're 1/20th of the world's population, and %40 of the military spending.

Just imagine if you put even 10% of that money towards something worthwhile and domestic.

Isn't the US the largest economy as well? It's probably more fair to judge defense spending as a % of each particular nation's own GNP.

(edit: Meaning, we probably spend a disproportionate compared to say, most European countries, but then it might be appalling to learn that some countries blow their whole wad on it rather than other things. *cough*NorthKorea*cough*)
