For one I didn't say there were no liberal, gay or lefty nutjobs, far from it. I think that a considerable part of germany's "left Party" secretly dream of a violent revolution, for instance. I just wanted to make the point that there are violent extremists on either end of the spectrum.

And for another, the cases you cite differ from the Sheppard case: Sheppard's murderers killed him just for being gay. The lesbian couple didn't torture that boy to make a point against heterosexuals, they were "standard perverts" who just happened to be lesbians. Similar crimes happen in all kinds of households, be they hetero, gay, lesbian, whatever. And the rapist/murderer in the second case didn't pick his victims out of a hate for hetero women either. Not to mention the fact that we have no idea if these people might be republicans anyway.

As the article says, it's a false parallel which sounds like a really good point at the surface, but is moot upon closer inspection.

In the Shepard case, the intent was to rob him, the fact he was gay was played up. He was hitting on guys in the bar, but these losers saw that he had money, and wanted to lure him out of there.

And the hard left writer from Salon was trying to diffuse the parallels, that was his attempt to explain it away!
