software Google's Chrome Browser Challenges Microsoft's IE8

Google's Chrome Browser Challenges Microsoft's IE8
Jennifer LeClaire, newsfactor.com

Does the world need yet another Web browser? Google thinks so and planned to make its beta version of the door to the World Wide Web available on Tuesday.

Google did not say what time Tuesday the new browser, dubbed Chrome, would be downloadable in more than 100 countries. But analysts were to get a sneak peak at Google's Mountain View, Calif., headquarters at 11 a.m. Pacific time, according to Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Research.

"Until people really have a chance to download and use Chrome, it's difficult to say whether or not it's going to be a significant player," Sterling said, noting Google's servers could crash in the wake of millions of people trying to download the new browser. "Chrome could have a Safari-like share, an Opera-like share, or less. Then again, Google has some pretty massive distribution and it could gain adoption globally."

Google's Mandate: Improve Browsing

Google said it is launching Chrome because the company believes it can add value for users and help drive innovation on the Web. Sundar Pichai, Google's vice president of product management, and Linus Upson, Google's engineering director, said the concept for Chrome stems from a discussion about what kind of browser could exist if they started from scratch and built on the best elements available.

Google used components from Apple's WebKit and Mozilla's Firefox, among others, and the company is making all its code open source. Google said it hopes to collaborate with the entire Internet community to help drive the Web forward.

"We realized that the Web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser," Pichai and Upson wrote on the Google blog. "What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for Web pages and applications, and that's what we set out to build."

The Google duo said the browser is streamlined and simple on its surface. They called Chrome "clean and fast." But under the hood, Google said it has built a browser foundation that does a better job running modern complex Web applications.

"By keeping each tab in an isolated 'sandbox,' we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites," Pichai and Upson wrote. "We improved speed and responsiveness across the board. We also built a more powerful JavaScript engine, V8, to power the next generation of Web applications that aren't even possible in today's browsers."

Should Microsoft Be Nervous?

Microsoft has released a Beta 2 version of Internet Explorer 8. Should Microsoft be nervous? Sterling said he sees no reason for Microsoft to shake in its boots, but the software giant won't be leaping for joy, either. Google's entry into the browser market only highlights the bitter rivalry between the two tech giants.

"On one hand, Google is independently trying to create a better experience. Google has developed a broad cloud-computing initiative with apps, and Chrome is the front door to Web-based computing. In that context it makes a lot of sense for Google to try to adapt a browser for this cloud-based era of computing," Sterling said. "On another level it's defensive because Google is concerned about Microsoft's using its IE8 and the browser market share as a way to direct traffic away from Google."

Chrome is currently only available for Windows-based computers. Google said it is working on Mac and Linux versions, but did not say when Chrome would be available for those platforms.

I just downloaded it...it sure is different. It would take a lot of getting used to as it's different than any other browser I've ever tried.

To say it was spartan would be an understatement.

Hmm... I dunno. I'm using it now and I feel it's very similar to Firefox.

I do prefer it though, and it's become my browser of choice already!

I just tried it and couldn't figure how to go to a bookmarked location... among other things. It does look OK but I agree with Lance that it needs some filling out.

The screenshots are preventing me from downloading it.....it's too sparse, I hate that. When they de-uglify it I might try it out.

Once you install it, the second tab (after New Tab) will be a page full of YouTube vids on how to use it. After you go through those.. it's not that bad!

How long before we all find out that everything we see and do is pipelined into Google's data mining?
