One thing that annoys me about the Jewish.. They make a bigger deal about their religion than black people do about their color.. Its really tiring.. Shut the fuck up about it already...

Spitz gets a bad rap in my book. He wasn't the nicest guy in the world, but he wasn't a rotten guy either. People wanted a smiling cheerful hero, and he wasn't that-- he reminds me a bit of Lance Armstrong, kinda prickly and intense. The other thing was that he was competing in a true "amateur" era, and unlike Phelps who doesn't have to do anything other than smile, Spitz felt he had to hustle to make a living off his medals-- he had no sponsorships, no nothing.

As to the Jewish stuff, it was a big story at the time . . .there aren't that many Jewish athletes, and none of his calibre. The other thing about Spitz was that he won at the Munich Olympics, so there was a pretty obvious story there (first Olympics in Germany since 1936). . . which only became more intense when the Black September guys killed the Israeli athletes. In that context, his background was a big story-- today I don't think anyone would care.

Phelps? No, except for the swimming, he's just a pretty ordinary Baltimore kid, so far as I know. He went to Towson High School and University of Michigan; if he had some extreme religious views I'd have thought he'd have been at other sorts of schools. I don't hear endless thanks to God or whatever . . . if he's got some extreme religious views, he's being really discreet about them

It reminds me of "Airplane", when someone asked for something small to read, and the stewardess handed a thin pamphlet of "Jewish Sports Legends"
