I'm babbling about the western countries, and in particular the US, selling outdated arms to small obscure countries, then acting high and mighty when they get into a fight with said weapons. I accept that the British government do it too, but historically the US government is the worst offender.

How is Georgia obscure? The US has invested a lot of money in that country since they became independent (and so have other western countries) And how are the M-16 and the M-4 outdated? They are used by the US as well as many other NATO countries.

At the risk of derailing the thread a little more are the Russians sure that the rifles were M40's? The M40 is used my the Marines while the M24 is used by the Army;

M40
M24

I think that its whistling past the graveyard to suggest that the problem is bellicose language from the Russian diplomatic service-- which merely is echoing what Putin and Medvedev are saying.

There is a real problem with Russia; it is not a "misunderstanding"-- it is to the contrary an "understanding". Wars have been fought in all these places before, for pretty much the same reasons as we're talking about today.

Anyone care to remember the Crimean War? We've got all the elements . . . right down to an idiot Emperor doing a bad imitation of his illustrious [father][uncle] seeking glory in the East.

US has all the advantages in technology and air power, the new Russian designs are good quality but their actual field gear is still 20 years behind the west.

Basically their forces have been in hibernation for the last couple of decades and are only just entering 1992, it'll take a while for all their new stuff to get out to the troops, they prefer to selll it for hard cash to foreigners

They dont have any sea power to speak of and the airforce is still old so unless the US feels like invading Russia or at least the Caucasus they have all the advantages unless its mano a mano.

China

Think about it: Who won the war between Iran & Iraq?
The US & Israel

Who won the War between the US and Iraq?
Iran

Who won the War between Hitler & Stalin?
The United States

Most often, the "winner" of a war is the power that does the least fighting.

Don't have to worry about it staying between the US and the USSR (come on, we all know that's what the Russians want again). This has all the makings of WW3.
