News Beijing takes dog off the menu for Olympics

Beijing takes dog off the menu for Olympics
Reuters

BEIJING (Reuters) - Beijing has asked hotels and restaurants in the city to take dog meat off the menu for the duration of next month's Olympics and September's Paralympics.

Dog is eaten not only by the large Korean community in China's capital but is also popular in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants.

A directive from the Beijing Food Safety Office issued last month ordered Olympic contractor hotels not to provide any dishes made with dog meat and said any canine material used in traditional medicated diets must be clearly labeled.

Concerned that canine dishes might offend animal rights groups and Western visitors, Beijing said restaurants expected to be popular among foreign visitors must stop serving dog meat "to respect the dining customs of different countries."

The directive "advocated" that all restaurants serving dog suspend it during the Olympics but made no mention of the many popular establishments with donkey on the menu.

Criticism from Westerners caused the dog meat-loving South Koreans to ban canine dishes for a period of time during the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

I've eaten donkey a few times, it was OK but nothing special. Apparently it's fairly popular in parts of Italy and throughout Spain and Portugal. Actually, there are quite a few really nice salami varieties with donkey meat in them.

I guess as long as they treat the animals right and it's no endangered species, I wouldn't be offended by anybody eating anything. As long as they don't try to talk me into trying thigs I find disgusting.

I'm pretty sure you can't get donkey at any restaurant in the US, but there are plenty of other exotic things you can order.

I wouldn't be offended if someone was eating dog (being offended by something like that is stupid IMO, after all, you are in someone else's country). Like you said, as long as no one tries to make me eat anything I didn't want, they can eat whatever the heck they want

I don't see why people do this kind of thing, if its normal for you to eat dog every other day, then who cares. If someone doesn't want to eat it, then don't

Yeah, it's about as silly as muslims getting all worked up about public display or pigs and pig images in western countries.

Gossip No Dog meat during the Bejing Olympics

Dog meat off the menu during Beijing Olympics
Restaurant staff told to 'patiently' suggest other options for diners

BEIJING - Canine cuisine is being sent to the doghouse during next month’s Beijing Olympic Games.

Dog meat has been struck from the menus of officially designated Olympic restaurants, and Beijing tourism officials are telling other outlets to discourage consumers from ordering dishes made from dogs, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Friday.

Waiters and waitresses should “patiently” suggest other options to diners who order dog, it said, quoting city tourism bureau Vice Director Xiong Yumei.

Dog, known in Chinese as “xiangrou,” or “fragrant meat,” is eaten by some Chinese for its purported health-giving qualities.

Beijing isn’t the first Olympic host to slap a ban on the dish.

South Korea banned dog meat during the 1988 Seoul Olympics by invoking a law prohibiting the sale of “foods deemed unsightly.” After the Olympics, the ban was not strictly enforced.

Dog meat is also eaten in some other Asian countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.
