| Internet may run out of addresses by 2011, warns OECD By Emma Thelwell The internet could run out of addresses by 2011, cutting off access to new users and stifling creativity across the globe, unless governments step up their investment, the OECD warned today. The leading economic authority reported today that nearly 85pc of all available internet addresses are already in use, with the remainder likely to be used up within three years. The rapid growth of broadband internet, which has helped make the web a fundamental part of economic and social life in many developed countries, encouraged more than a billion new internet users connect last year. Available addresses are crucial to this ongoing growth because all new users connecting to the internet need an IP (internet protocol) address. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development called on governments to adopt an updated IP network which will provide an almost unlimited number of addresses and help drive the rollout of broadband, internet-connected mobile phones, sensor networks and new services. The group pointed to countries such as Japan and the US, which have already instigated the upgrade. The Japanese telecoms group NTT, for example, uses the IP version 6 (IPv6) to connect thousands of earthquake sensors through a computer system that sends automatic alerts to television programmes and turns traffic lights red. This type of application requires millions of IP addresses, and so cannot work on today's internet. Meanwhile, the US government has set a June deadline for every government agency to be compatible with IPv6. The Chinese government plans to use the 2008 Olympics in Beijing to test its IPv6 network, called China Next Generation Internet, with mobile devices, transport and security systems. However, some internet service providers have been reluctant to invest in the new network due to the current low demand. The report from the OECD said: "Governments could play a role as a large user of Internet services by stimulating demand for IPv6 through their own procurement policies and through public-private partnerships in IPv6 research and development." Governments and businesses need to start preparing now for the move, said the OECD. It also discouraged the 'short-term' solution whereby some regions would adopt IPv6, or just adapt the old - and current - IPv4 version. The report warned: "This would impact the economic opportunities offered by the internet with severe consequences in terms of stifled creativity and deployment of new services."

| I posted a similar thread a few months back.Massive amounts of new pc users are only part of the problem, it's the other devices that require IP's that are killing the current available address system. certain religions predict the world will come to it's true end 2010 -2012.Pretty fitting if the net takes a huge dump around 2011 |
