Brit's 'Fat Wife' Barred Entry In New Zealand

Wellington, New Zealand - Immigration officials in New Zealand have told a British man that his wife cannot join him in the country as an immigrant for being "too fat."

Richie Trezise, a British national recruited to work as a submarine cable specialist in New Zealand, said he himself had to shed some two inches in his waistline before he was allowed to work in Wales.

He said if his wife, Rowan, is unable to lose weight and join him this Christmas, he may abandon employment in New Zealand.

Rowan reportedly was rejected entry into the country after registering a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 42, which is over the benchmark of 30 in order to be considered as normal.

Richie is one of the only four qualified persons capable of supervising the Southern Cross Cable linking New Zealand with Australia and the United States.

The New Zealand Immigration Service has a policy of rejecting obese immigration applicants in order not to burden the country's health care system.

Richie said, "My doctor laughed at me. He said he'd never seen anything more ridiculous in his whole life. He said not every overweight person is unhealthy or unfit."

He added, "The idea was that we were going to change our lifestyle totally and get outdoors and on mountain bikes and all sorts of activities.

Somebody pointed out that BMI has very litle to do with actual fitness, as most Rugby players and Amertican footballers count as obese on it but are quite fit! (in a hetero sexual, run a lot sort of way i should point out!)
