House is a great show though, I watched ER for a while in the beginning, but its novelty wore off for me.

There's no shame in admitting House is too sophisticated for ya Harp...at least you can discuss what happened on ER with the chicks at the office while the men all talk about what happened on House

The last three seasons of ER have been brilliant...bear in mind they were considering canceling it last year but the increasing ratings and critical success of the show prompted a renewal. I actually wish this WASN'T the final season now.

I watched the episode on tape last night with my Mom, we were both in tears (yeah, I cried big honking man tears). Everything about that episode worked perfectly, but it was profoundly sad. This however is what defines great TV, the ability to emotionally move people to such a degree.

Still, I am honestly glad I had something lighthearted to watch after ER ended. Had that been the final program of the evening I would have been left in a melancholy funk.

As for the house vs ER debate...totally apples and oranges. But if I had to tip one way or the other I'd say ER is the clear winner. House is an unrealistic take on medicine, cartoonish and full of that snarky attitude that is so prevalent and boring in today's entertainment world. Some call it groundbreaking, honestly, to me it's just a typical product of it's time and I earnestly believe it will age poorly. I'm not dissing on it's fans...this sort of TV is trendy and it would be silly to find it anything other than popular. But I'm no House fan and I think Hugh Laurie's performance in the role is overrated. Loved the guy in Blackadder though (and perhaps a pox on any who don't)...

I can't take it anymore, Felix, I'm cracking up. Everything you do irritates me. And when you're not here, the things I know you're gonna do when you come in irritate me. You leave me little notes on my pillow. Told you 158 times I can't stand little notes on my pillow. "We're all out of cornflakes. F.U." Took me three hours to figure out F.U. was 'Felix Unger'.

ER as a hospital program is one of the classics of the genre, supported by great acting and scripts. I would also put the following shows in that class:

St elsewhere
Casualty (the early years, before it morphed into a soap)

I agree that house is atypical but I think it may force the US TV industry to rethink its attitude to the genre. Hopefully, this will help move the writers away from the hideously schmaltzy (puerile) offerings like Grey's Anatomy (and the spin-off Private Practice).

We can but hope

So you discuss ER with the chicks at the office like Harp...no shame in that...just like Y&R and As the World Turns
