Serious discussion should be just that, serious.

One should not be concerned with having a thick skin; the discussion should remain solely on topic, and there should not be any personal insults, for any reason, ever.
I think that is perfectly acceptable to point out that a person is either citing wrong facts or is otherwise is misinformed; it is not acceptable to state that the other party to the discussion is, for example, "a moron". I have actually seen that in a reply to a post. Although the reply was not to me, I commented that such a reply was not proper. I guess, I was lucky in that I was not rebuked for not minding my own business!!
